We believe effective therapy includes collaboration with parents or guardians while also giving teens an appropriate level of privacy. The level of parent involvement depends on several factors including the teen’s age, needs, presenting concerns & applicable laws and professional standards.
This may include having the teen part of the discussions and updates. It can also be us informing the teen as to what we’ve shared with you in order to maintain the therapeutic relationship.
We’ll discuss expectations for communication and involvement before treatment begins and throughout the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
There needs to be some buy in by the teen - but starting therapy is hard for anyone. It can be intimidating especially for a teen that’s not used to sharing their thoughts & emotions. You can have them be part of the process in picking a therapist, give it time for them to build a relationship with the therapist. Ultimately, if someone doesn’t want to be in/talk in therapy, there is only so much that can be accomplished.

Each client and their families needs are unique and therefore parent involvement and planning will be tailor based on individual needs. In general there is some basic involvement and updates as needed. Teens will be made aware of what is discussed to ensure trust.
-
Teens are highly familiar with navigating the current technological age we live in and for the most part do well with telehealth. There are some instances where this isn't the case but will be addressed on an individual basis. Some reasons teens might not be a good fit would be privacy, or resistance and lack of engagement which can be harder to navigate via telehealth.

If it is in the best interest of the client we can sign a release of information to coordinate with other providers, or provide summaries of services.
-
It is very common to have parent or guardian involvement depending on the presenting concern. While teens above a certain age have privacy, and this will be honored, it is often beneficial to have the family unit involved to varying degrees.
